funky mamas

you know how it is,

just because you have the privilege of being pregnant, all of a sudden you are expected to morph from stylish sassy Saskia into shapeless shoddy Shaz. The vast majority of maternity wear out there is comprised of items that, under any other circumstances, you’d warn your grandmother about, and maybe even your worst enemy. No-one gets pregnant so they have a good excuse to wear maternity clothes.

Well, there are good stores out there, and even gem items hidden within some mediocre ranges. This page aims to point you in the direction of where to find those maternity items you need to wear, but making it as painless as possible.

cravematernityCrave maternity have a good range that is reasonably priced. Particular high notes include the Cosmopolitan suit, which, with prices starting at £52, is a good investment. The Lisa B essentials collection is also well worth a look, and the essential white shirt and silk printed dress are a must.

For the perfect accessory, check out mumstheword’s selection of designer changing bags. The yummy mummy and Oi Oi ranges are fabulous, and you can get one in every colour to match every outfit.

If you need a dress for a special occasion, or even your wedding, Tiffany Rose has to be your first pAtlantis Dressort of call. These dresses are made of silk and chiffon, and refuse to compromise their style and flowing lines to accommodate a growing bump. Favoured by celebrities to include Emma Bunton and Katie Price, the Atlantis and Oyster gowns would even be a fine choice for non-pregnant fashionistas.

Another site that deserves a good look is Isabella Oliver. A market leader in providing fashion-conscious mums-to-be clothes to suit their style, this site is full of luxury items. Of particular note is the duo swing dress (pictured) or the quintessential wrap cardigan.

For fashionable baby wearing, HOTslings has to be the discerning choice. Big mama slings (no relation!) have a huge range of slings of every style, including a great choice of HOTslings in different colours, patterns and materials. There are even organic and reversible choices. And you will both look the bees knees.

Let’s face it, pregnancy is not really known for being a time of luxurious underwear. Functional and movement-reducing replace lacy and alluring when describing your underwear drawer. But it doesn’t have to be this way…

Even if HotMilk didn’t have fabulous products, a slick website and an idiot’s, sorry a man’s, guide to buying underwear, it would deserve inclusion on this site due to the fantastic name. Even better, the products live up to the name, with luxurious and elegant sets that will get pulses racing across the globe. Cherry Blossom is a favourite design, but note  that larger ladies may struggle as the larger cup and back sizes are only available in two designs, and 40″ is the biggest size anyway. HotMilk is also available from figleaves.com

If your smalls aren’t quite so, well, small, try Bravissimo for your maternity and nursing undies. They have a range of both soft-cup and nursing bra and pant sets and actually look like underwear ought to look, instead of the dull and uniform shoulder holster most maternity ‘lingerie’ consists of!

Alternatively, take a look a La Senza. They have a dedicated maternity range which includes bras and pants in matching cheery spots as well as standard black and white, and some great knickers, including ‘I love my bump’ and ‘yummy mummy’ slogans.
